Not quite true. GNU Emacs for many years had no decent X11 support, no
menu bars, no drop-down or pop-up menus, no support for multiple
windows, no decent mouse support or font styles or syntax highlighting.
This is the reason why Lucid Emacs (which later became XEmacs) was

I remember this quite well and have used lemacs and then XEmacs for many
years.
