In fact, you have 3 selection mechanisms under X11: cut buffers,
the primary selection, and the clipboard. Like under Mac OS X,
you usually need Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, etc. to handle the clipboard
under X11. But the (obsolete but still used by xterm) cut buffers
and the primary selection are both handled by select and paste
with the middle button. So, users can use what they prefer.
BTW, I almost never use the clipboard: I find select and paste
with the middle button much more practical. Unfortunately, xterm
loses the primary selection too easily. The consequence is that
nothing is pasted in many applications and the cut buffer 0 is
pasted in some other applications (like xterm and emacs). See:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=277832
Apple X11 seems to use the primary selection mechanism for the
communication with Aqua, but as I don't use the X11 clipboard,
I'm not sure (there could be some fallback if the default buffer
is empty). Anyway, all these selection mechanisms may lead to
strange behaviors.
