My guess? Use -Y instead of -X. Your symptoms are consistent with this.

Hello,
I've been having problems with X11 for the last 2 or 3 months. Specifically the problems occur when I ssh -X into a server. If I try to launch matlab I get the following message:
XTEST extension not installed on this X server: Success
The normal windows then open, but are usually grayed out. I close the window and relaunch matlab and the program is usable, but the bottom and right portions of each window are grayed out and new figure windows also appear gray.
When I try to launch gimp on the same server I get the following message:
The program 'gimp' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. ....
.....
This program then does not even open and I am returned to the command prompt.
I am using Mac OS 10.3.9 on a 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 Powerbook. The version of matlab I attempt to use is R2006a. The problems began occurring after a system update in March (I think). I had never experienced this problem before this point. I also get the same errors when I used Mac OS 10.4 on a desktop mac.
I've tried logging onto a different server and attempted to launch that version of matlab (14), but the window is just grayed out and I am forced to close it. I do not receive any error messages.
Thank you for your time, and please ask if more information is needed.
John
