There is a fink beginners mailing list and a fink-users mailing list.
Those might be more suited for these kinds of questions.
Briefly, anything compiled on ppc won't work on intel, and vice-
versa. Some stuff might just happen to run via rosetta, but in
general breakage will occur.
Almost everything compiled on 10.4 will work on the same architecture
on 10.5.
You need to have installed Xcode 3.0 and this installs the X11 SDK by
default.

I'm trying to re-install fink from scratch. I've been making do with
my old (Tiger) installation, but need an emacs that generates its own
X windows and some package upgrades.
X-11 is upgraded with the 2.2.0.1 package, the fink base installed
after removing InstallationCheck.
Fink commander runs, but complains "could not determine XFree86
version number" and proceeds to install xfree86 when I try a a basic
emacs21 install.
Will this ever work? There are too many of the old programs that
complain of "Fatal malloc_jumpstart() error" because the installation
migrated from a PPC to this i486 along with the Leopard upgrade.

Lots of X11 fixes going in all the time. Make sure you have the
latest X11 from http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz, and make
sure you have the unstable tree in your fink.conf.
Any specific issues you're running into?

10.5.3? I don't think that is available yet, at least not
publicly. I
have no problems with Fink under 10.5.2 with or without X11. What
specifically is your problem with Fink?
