It seems to me that .Xresources should be read/loaded
before applications are launched, no?
Yes. This is a well known problem. Moreover, the reason for it is well
understood, however finding the right fix is nontrivial because the
underlying race condition appears to be inherent in the current
architecture of X11 on Leopard. We are all waiting with bated breath
to see if Jeremy comes up with a clever solution. (I know I can't
think of one.)
FWIW, 2.3.1_rc1 should be "better," but I still notice it happening in
some places because my sleep() is getting interrupted sometimes. I
will hopefully have something more for you to try with 2.3.1 (but
don't count on it. I don't want to delay 2.3.1 too much.), but it
will still be a race condition (albeit giving xinitrc a bit of a head
start)... I need to figure out a good method for making this interrupt
based, but my only thought at the moment involves changing the AppleWM
protocol to include a message from quartz-wm to the server that it has
started. Also, I think there's already something in place to tell the
server that a WM is running already, so I may just need to find that
bit.
