Since installing 2.3.2 rc4, I have seen three or four occasions where
X11 just froze up --- none of my windows would respond at all. AFAIR
this never happened before, so I'm afraid it's a regression introduced
post-rc3. Unfortunately I have no idea how to make it happen
reproducibly, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen something
similar.
The first few times I saw it, putting the laptop to sleep and waking it
(ie close and open the cover) fixed the problem. Didn't work the latest
time, so I poked a bit further and noted:
* X11 still seems to respond to menu items, in particular I could still
create a new xterm window (which was just as frozen as the rest) or
bring different windows to front by selecting them from the menu.
The About box works too.
* The red/yellow/green buttons on the headers of app windows don't work.
* No evidence that any events are getting passed to or from X
applications.
* I think moving a window by dragging its header didn't work either but
am no longer 100% sure if I tried that.
I ended up killing X11 to get out of it. Fortunately no great amount
of unsaved state in my apps.
After reviewing the recent traffic I wonder whether this could be
related to the reports of X11 consuming 100% CPU. I neglected to look
at "top" or Activity Monitor, but will surely do so next time. However
I gathered from that thread that people were still getting responses
from X11, so it might not be the same thing.
ObDetails: early-2008 Macbook Pro, OSX 10.5.6, and yes I remembered to
reinstall rc4 after the 10.5.6 update.
Any suggestions how to gather additional useful info next time?
regards, tom lane
