Well that's one problem already, on Leopard you don't need to set
DISPLAY. Make sure you remove any commands that set DISPLAY from your
setup scripts. It should be of the form /tmp/launch-xxxxxx/:0
This will cause X to automatically start when required.

/usr/X11/bin/startx
Did you install the latest from http://xquartz.macosforge.org? The
version in Leopard doesn't use xinit.Attachment:
