Hi Jeremy:
Thanks very much for the reply.

I've seen this issue before (I believe it's reported on trac), but I
haven't been able to reproduce it myself easily. Additionally, I
admit that I haven't looked into it because I haven't been able to
reproduce it and I thought its lack of appearance on my radar was
because it wasn't commonly occurring. This is obviously not the
case for you. Is there a way I can get access to this 'coot'
application?
Yes.
Is it free?
It is GPLed, and the dependencies are LGPLed, or are intended to be.
I've created and maintain a coot package for fink (it is in the
unstable/sci branch), and I've also made pre-compiled some stand-alone
versions, but the latter have caused users some problems, so I haven't
really kept up with that.
Unless you already have fink, I would really hate for you to go to all
this trouble (there is about a gigabyte of dependencies) so it might
be easier for me to see if I can reproduce the problem with something
a little bit easier to install.
Can you point me where to get it?

If it's not free, then I can probably ask the developer nicely to
see if they'd let me use a copy for bug testing. Can you please
tell me exactly the steps you take to cause the lockup?
The most reproducible thing is simply to try to resize a window before
the program finishes loading. That freezes the Xserver every time. I
try never to do that but it gets me at least once a day.
Do you launch it from a .app bundle? from within Terminal.app?
from the Applications menu? from an open xterm? Do you maximize
the initial window right when it appears to trigger the lockup? The
more information you can provide me the better.
I typically launch it the unix way from iTerm or Terminal.app, but it
doesn't seem to matter in my brief tests. I have to source the
environment script and path so the indirect approaches like the Xmenu
or applets require a bit of messing around. I also typically launch
it from within a screen session (/usr/bin/screen), but still get the
problem without that. The resizing freeze occurs when I drag the
bottom right corner of the window, or simply try to move the window.
There are lots of other things that seem to trigger freezes, this one
is simply the easiest to reproduce.
I've heard from a few other people since last night. Two have the
problem, one doesn't:
Hi Bill,
I am having exactly the same problem with xquartz freezing with
pymol, coot and imosflm on my mac running OS10.5.2. I have installed
the updated X11 software but this makes no difference. If you find
an answer could you let me know?
Thanks,
Simon

I've been using 10.5.2 plus the X11 2.1.4 update from the Xquartz
site, & I haven't had problems with freezing lately, I _think_
not since this update. The main problem is that Exposé doesn't
work properly
not much help ...

I'm hoping it is just something stupid I am doing, but if it is Luser
error, I think it is fairly subtle.
Thanks for everything.

Thanks so much,
Jeremy

Hi Folks:
I know I've asked before, but it is so frustrating to lose an hour
of work, trying to convince myself that I won't get reamed this
time. But I keep going back, like to some sort of abusive
codependent relationship, to put it into California terms.
I'm using a molecular graphics model building crystallography
program called coot, but this happens with enough other X11
applications that I don't think it is the fault of coot. Prior to
OS X 10.5, I never ever had a problem with X11.
If I try to resize a window while the program is loading, it is a
guarantee that the Xserver will freeze. However, if I try to be
real careful, I can start to get work done, but then when some
window or pop-up menu appears, a half hour or an hour into a
session of work, I'll get a random freeze.
I'm running 10.5.2 on intel (but this happens on all my 10.5.2
computers, ppc and intel) and the latest X11 from the update page,
and when I sample the frozen processes I get this as output:
<Sample of X11.txt>
<x11_hosing.txt>
My kids want to know why I swear at the computer so much. I'm
almost ready to reformat the disk and install ubuntu linux.
Thanks.
