Writing your own .xinitrc is not for the faint of heart: You have to
duplicate a lot of what is in the globalxinitrc file, including
starting the proper window manager. (It's not that hard, but probably
beyond the average user.)
If all you wish to do is to modify your keyboard, just create a file
.Xmodmap in your home directory. The global xinitrc will run xmodmap
on that file.
I am not sure if this will work with the X11 that came with Leopard,
though. It's been too long since I used it ... You may wish to go to
http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz
and grab X11.pkg version 2.1.4 and install that. (Requires reboot.)
