And starting with 2.2.0 rc1, you can plop in system-wide "additions"
to xinitrc in /usr/X11/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/ ... this was done to
address Fink's collision with our xinitrc.

I¹m running 10.5.2 and I¹m trying to modify the keyboard mapping in
order to
use familiar Mac key combinations as shortcuts to interact with X11
based
applications. (basically, switch command & control keys around).
I¹ve seen
instructions on the internet on how to do this with xmodmap. If I
manually
execute xmodmap while x11 is running then it seems to work okay.
I¹d like
this to occur automatically, however. I¹m not well versed in X11
but from
what I understand, ~/.xinitrc is supposed to be invoked on X11
startup at
some point so that I can enter in startup commands applicable for
the whole
session. In my experience with Leopard, if .xinitrc exists and is
non-empty, I can¹t seem to get X11 to work at all, not matter what
I put in
.xinitrc (even simple echo statements, comments, or whitespace). Can
someone suggest to me how to proceed?
Writing your own .xinitrc is not for the faint of heart: You have to
duplicate a lot of what is in the globalxinitrc file, including
starting the proper window manager. (It's not that hard, but probably
beyond the average user.)
If all you wish to do is to modify your keyboard, just create a file
.Xmodmap in your home directory. The global xinitrc will run xmodmap
on that file.
I am not sure if this will work with the X11 that came with Leopard,
though. It's been too long since I used it ... You may wish to go to
http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz
and grab X11.pkg version 2.1.4 and install that. (Requires reboot.)
