This is my preferred method of running MATLAB on my work machine, via
X11 and X forwarding, with all the methods described (ssh -Y, matlab
-nojvm), with R2007b + Tiger, R2007b + Leopard, and R2008a + Leopard.
The host (remote) machine is running Leopard also, and this all works
irrespective of the state of the machine, provided that it is on and
not asleep. That is, even if the machine is at the login screen, this
all still works for me, as I am logging in remotely. A thing of
beauty, Unix.
Make sure you have uncommented the appropriate lines that enable X11
forwarding in your /etc/sshd_config and/or /etc/ssh_config files on
the host machine (the remote computer). You may need to restart stuff
afterward for this to work fully. Test it by logging in remotely and
running a process like 'xclock &'.
