The only way that windows open in the original space with auto-swoosh off is if you have that application tied to that desktop. As in, it is set in the spaces preferences to open it on a certain space. In that case, it will open all windows there, regardless of whether you move or not, but the solution is as simple as unsetting that preference.

I've just tried it with Camino and X11, and I get the new window in
the current Space, not the Space the first window of the app was
opened in.
