(add a Mail.app annoyance: it really, *really* wants to reply to
these with my campus mail account even though the mailbox is very
clearly my home account. ????)

Really? I must have missed that -- how's it done? Does it work with
X11?
Through the System Preferences panel for Spaces, and no.
(What I want is that when I ask an application via menu to open a new
window, it opens on the current Space. I should bugreport that, but
my hit rate with Apple bug reports so far is 0/3. Feh.)
The defaults seting trick seems to have given me that.
I get that I no longer get auto-flipped to the application's desktop,
but the application still opens its windows there.
