So the xterm is trying to use a pty slave that it has allocated. This
usually means the pty slave device is in a stuck state, having been
"deallocated" but with some process holding open a reference to it,
and every time an xterm is started that is handed the stuck pty it
goes into a tailspin.
I would use lsof on the stuck xterm process to try to determine which
pty is stuck, then lsof on the pts device to see what process is
holding a reference to it and kill that process.
