It became "functional" in Tiger, then was removed in Leopard and was
readded in either 2.3.2_beta2 or 2.3.2_beta3.
I tried with no preferences in place, and X11 starts up in rootless
mode, so you must've had rootless=FALSE in your preferences somehow...
