Hi Jeremy,
SL X11 appears to provide
cairo 1.8.6
pixman 0.14.0
freetype 9.20.3
fontconfig 2.6.0
libpng 1.2.35
I assume some of these will be updated in 2.4.1, but December seems
far away.
I am tempted to compile newer versions (cairo 1.8.8, libpng 1.2.39,
pixman 0.16.0, fontconfig 2.7.1) and install in /usr/X11/lib. In
particular, there are apparently security issues with libpng 1.2.35,
so it seems this one needs to be updated.
Any reason(s) why I should not do this? Any special configuration
choices I should make?
Thanks for any help you can provide, and thanks for all your efforts
on X11.
Louis

So many of you are wondering what exactly is the state of X11 in SL.
Well, it should come as no surprise to you that the MacOSForge
releases were actually in some ways in-progress releases for what
would eventually become X11 in OSX 10.6. The version in 10.6 is
reported as 2.3.4. This release is (as you can probably guess)
between 2.3.3.2 and 2.4.0, but there will be no similar release for
Leopard.
The 2.3.4 version in SL incorporates most of the main fixes that
went into 2.4.0, but not some of the "upstream pushed out a new
version of libSomething, so let's include it" changes. Similarly,
the 2.3.4 version is still on the 1.4.x server base (although much
newer than 2.3.3.1). The 1.5.x server in 2.4.0 still has a few
regressions in it, and I didn't feel the improvements outweighed the
risks at the time.
There will be no 2.4.0 release for SnowLeopard.
At this time, the plan is to release 2.4.1 for both Leopard and SL.
My guess is that this will happen around December. The Leopard
releases will continue to be installed in /usr/X11 and /Applications/
Utilities/X11.app, but SL will be installed outside of those
locations to avoid clobber from SoftwareUpdate. This should allow
easier system administration (no longer needing to reinstall X11
after a SU) and easier regression testing.
If anyone has any specific questions, feel free to ask them.
Thanks,
Jeremy
