I am attempting to modify the keymaps for both the builtin and an external keyboard for a Mac OS X 10.5.6 MacBook running XQuartz v2.3.2.1. Here are the questions I have:
- Where is the default ".xinitrc" (or equivalent global file) located in v2.3.2.1? Looks to be different than the version shipped by Apple. The private ".xinitrc" file may still be created and is executed.
- Is there a way from within the ".xinitrc" (either the default or in a given users home directory) to detect whether an external keyboard is attached (i.e. via USB) at the time ".xinitrc" is executed so that different xmodmap commands may be issued?
- Is there a way to create more than one X11 application entry (i.e. one that would run by default and utilize the standard ".xinitrc" file and another that would be named differently and would start utilizing a ".xinitrc" file with a different name or in a different location? The reason for this is if I am running local X11 apps, etc., Iwant to utilize the standard keymappings and local window manager. However, if I want to allow a remote window manager on another host to manage the windows (i.e. Unix, OpenVMS, etc.) and display their own desktops (in full screen mode), I need to execute a ".xinitrc" that will modify keymaps and start the local X11 server without starting the local window manager.
- What would be the best way to define new keys (using currently unused keycode values) within Mac OS X that could then by utilized in xmodmap commands to remap the keycodes to particular functions (i.e. create a definition for "fn-7" to an unused keycode that xmodmap could map to "KP_7").
Thanks for any and all assistance. Best Regards, Ted
