Dear Harald,
Dear Jeremy,
Thank you very much for your help, it didn't remove the cause of the
trouble but it helped me locate it, where I didn't expect it:
The procedure by macosforge (see link below) first did not seem to
work, but when I went through it again with a vergin admin accout it
did - but just for that very account. It turned out that the new
installation worked fine on all of my accounts where I had not
customized X11at all. On the other accounts where I had customized it
the way I usually do (I am not aware of using exotic settings) it
failed the way I had described it earlier to you and the x11 list.
Actually, I think the entire process of a clean deinstall-reinstall
had not been necessary at all if I had known ealier where to look for
an error!
I haven't located yet the very setting that caused the trouble, since
a failing x11 start doesn't allow me to access x11 preferences via the
menu. Now, there are two questions:
1) What user-specific files does x11 access during startup, and where
are they located in my home directory?
2) Would I need to start custmization again from zero or is there any
human-readible form of my previous settings saved in my still-existing
files?
** @ x11-list & developers **:
Please configure future-releases of x11 in a way that if x11 fails to
start with user settings it at least does start with default system
settings and displays a warning, rather than quitting with unspecific
footage in console.log. That shouldn't be such a big deal to make but
may save a lot of time when locating an error (especially by people
who aren't "deep" experts...)
Thanks,
Joerg.

Dear Jeremy,
I have attached a part of Console log that appears to repeat itself
endlessly. Simultanously I observe a considerable slowdown of
system speed.
That slowdown is due to the cycle of trying to start X11. Did you
try rebooting? This seems odd to me.
You can always just try this if you think your system got borked
somehow:

Here is in greater detail what I did, and possibly did wrong, thank
you very much for taking a look at it:
I had a fine running and up-to-date MacOS on my PB G4 (PPC) with a
fine running X11 2.3.1 from the usual sourceforge site. Then I
installed apples security-update 2009-001 via System Update
successfully, then (after reboot) I installed X11 2.3.2.1 without
previously reinstalling X11 2.3.1.
That should work fine...
I dont care much which version of X11 I run as long as it works,
but I think with sec-update2009-001 I need at least X11 2.3.2.1,
don't I? Maybe I would need a very clean deinstall of X11, but
how ?!?
Yeah, something seems to have been horked, but I dunno. I suggest
you just follow the link above to cleanly deinstall and reinstall.
Sorry I can't offer more insight. =/

Since the security update 2009-001 I don't get my X11 back to work.
FWIW, I did exactly as you (it was exciting, discovering your message
immediately after installing 2009-001), but X11 works fine for me
after installing X11-2.3.2.1 on top of 2009-001. I have a PB G4 too.
I believe the standard advice after a software update going sour is to
get and apply the combo updater from Apple. Caveat: Since this has
never happened to me yet, I never tried it myself.
