I've recently upgraded to XQuartz 2.3.2.1 (MacOS 10.5.6), and I've

configured
to use the system alert effect:
[perdita:~]$ defaults read org.x.x11 enable_system_beep

And the system alert is set to the standard "funk" sound effect in
System
Preferences; I certainly get it in Terminal.app. But when I start an
xterm, running bash, and hit Backspace at a prompt, I don't hear
anything.
I think there's a resource setting that tells xterm whether it should
do an audible or visual beep. Try just doing the X11 beep rather than
getting xterm to do it:
~/src/freedesktop/test $ cat bell.c
#include <X11/Xlib.h>
int main() {
Display *dpy = XOpenDisplay(NULL);
XBell(dpy, 100);
XFlush(dpy);
return 0;
}
~/src/freedesktop/test $ gcc -o bell bell.c -lX11 -L/usr/X11/lib
~/src/freedesktop/test $ ./bell
The 'enable_system_beep' preference actually doesn't enable or disable
the beep. It changes which sound is player (the system alert sound or
an old-school tone beep)
