Thanks for verifying what I had suspected, that it was
nedit, since it did work with xterm. After I sent the email,
it occurred to me that nedit was probably getting the
selection value at the start of the selection rather than
the end, which would logically account for only the first
character being copied.

Read the small print under that option in the preferences. nedit is
one such application that doesn't reacquire PRIMARY when new text is
selected.

Nope. It's the same thing. It's acquiring PRIMARY. The problem is
that nedit acquires it when you star selecting the text and not when
you finish.
