$DISPLAY is not set before the first try. In the second try, it is
something like: "/tmp/launch-yLboip/:0"
Exactly, StartMatlab is doing something wrong. It is unsetting
DISPLAY and starting X11.app, then trying to connect to that X11 over
the launchd DISPLAY socket.
StartMatlab is buggy. Please file a bug with its developer.
