Hi Ed, no one has responded to this in a while, nice to have some company :-). I observed that the xemacs behaves normally when my mac is disconnected from any network. So it seems to be related to xemacs looking for some resources, maybe some name server, on the internet. In one of the earlier responses someone suggested building emacs with some module (I'm forgetting which) that looks for stuff on the internet disabled; that helped when running from home or one of my work locations but not another with a more restrictive firewall; so I'm guessing there are multiple xemacs modules that look at various ports for some kinds of services. Seems like it is maybe more a question for the xemacs list than for Apple.
