Hi Mike, thanks for this reply. Do you happen to know if the
xemacs's distributed by fink and macports have this option on or
off? I am not sure what CNAME is about but I gather it has something
to do with verifying domain name addresses. I am puzzled, why does an
editor need to know this?

I just saw this thread since I've been out of town. You might want
to try building XEmacs with the configure option "--with-ipv6-
cname=no" to see if that helps. See the discussion of this around
line 1750 in the PROBLEMS file distributed with XEmacs. As it says
there, turning this option on is not a real good idea, but it would
be interesting to see if it fixes the problem.
By the way, the most recent XEmacs does have an experimental option
to use GTK, but it's not on be default and I doubt you're using it.
