I was referring to X11SDK.pkg provided by XCode.
You need to click on "Custom" or "Options" or something like that in the XCode installer and check the box for "X11 SDK"

On SL, the xquartz.macosforge.org install will be in /opt/X11 and will not clash with the system X11.

Not really. The version released with SL is fairly recent. It is 2.3.4 which incorporates most of the changes from 2.4.0 except for the bump in the X11 server.
