Why was there even a gv in /usr/bin to begin with? The /usr prefix is managed by Apple. If you want to install your own stuff, put it in /usr/local instead.

What about just running 'gv' by itself?

What is the sample? Run 'sample <pid>' and look at the reported file.
What is reported to /var/log/system.log during this time?
Are you able to start other X11 applications from that terminal?
