One of the arguments for Mac OS superiority over MS OSes was always
that one has much more freedom installing and moving apps, and that is
undoubtedly why Apple went with the bundle approach to apps (unless it
was because that makes it easier and less obvious to increase
disk-usage O:-) )
Yeah, I know that a number of installers do not check where apps live,
despite the fact that the frameworks exist to figure that out (iTunes
anyone?); certain apps don't work when moved out of their designated
location (Image Capture being one) and there appear to be more and
more installers that won't install elsewhere but on the boot disk.
That doesn't mean I am going to increase directory complexity with
numerous symlinks -- updates are sufficiently infrequent to remember
which apps to move back temporarily (in fact, I always check an update
payload, nowadays).
Apple may know what's best for me, but I'll always know better [if not
only in the end] O:-)
I've never moved VirtualBox though - what with the startup items I was
disinclined to figure out what is supposed to have a fixed location
and what not (and I use the thing often enough not to hack things to
start those items on demand instead of at boot time).
