I'd follow-up that people who advise removing Apple's system X11 and
installing XQuartz are also crazy/mad. I don't think anyone on this list
would have ever suggested that, XQuartz is designed to live side-by-side
with Apple's X11, which is why it installs in /opt. As far as I know,
installing XQuartz in the way prescribed on the website would not lead
to any issues with GIMP.
There is something I have never understood:
If you install Xquartz, doesn't it by default modify DISPLAY and the
launchd agents so that Xquartz.app is started automatically instead of
X11.app whenever an X client is run? Now if that X client is (like Gimp)
linked with the libraries in /usr/X11, won't this lead to conflicts? Or
is there a mechanism that tells launchd to choose X11.app when the X
client needs it?
