Right, that dates from when XQuartz used to stomp over Apple's X11, including replacing versions of various libraries shipped with it. From SL on this has not been a problem, and removing either one should not be necessary.
(And answering a later comment in this thread, the Xquartz autostart is not relevant. If the prepackaged Gimp was linked against Apple's X11 *client* libraries, it needs those libraries in those versions present to run, but will run against either X11 *server*.)
