Those things were all OK.
I noticed Console messagers about time-outs accessing ~/.Xauthority, so I nuked it and let it be recreated.
Also (use the BIG hammer!) I tried a reboot, instead of a mere log-out.
It's working now. Could have been either of those fixed it, but I think my money's on the reboot.
