This does not address the actual question, but after using xemacs for about 20 years, I switched to "regular" GNU emacs (from MacPorts on my MacBook). That has made my life much better. For years I had issues with xemacs and ESS, Version Control, and other add-ons.
The need for new features in emacs 24 is actually the main reason I am about to move my Linux desktop to the latest Ubuntu.
Now that I think about it, I remember a night of panic in a hotel room trying to build xemacs on a MacBook after something had gone wrong. Luckily I finally got it to work and did not have to travel with no working emacs.
For XQuartz users, using MacPorts, this is how I installed emacs24:
sudo port install emacs +x11
My additional notes say:
"Fireup xcode and let it complete the install..." (before trying the install if you have not already, this was a new machine)
"Wait for font build on first start" (be patient, it takes a few minutes)
Jon
