In a sense yes they did: use another window manager. For me that's an evident choice anyway, as it means I can configure the same window management shortcuts on every X11 "desktop" I use, but I did evaluate WM choices until I found one that can be themed to blend in nicely. Not as perfectly as Quartz-WM, but I actually prefer to be able to see at a glance which windows are X11 and which belong to native apps.
FWIW, I've settled on xfwm4 with the Mint-X theme. Fits in nicely as with Aqua's Graphite theme, without falling for trying to be a 10.3 or 10.4 Aqua clone.
