Thanks for that and for such a quick response. Looks like it turns off localization. That’s consistent with the fact that I always have to switch on UTF-8 encoding in order to read the error messages from the compiler on the Ubuntu machine as well.

have this problem using the OS X terminal app, so I’m guessing there’s
something fishy with the X11 app?
