This sounds related to the issues some of us reported with windows
getting moved off-screen after sleep. If the xterms are just off
screen, not gone, you should be able to get them back in any of
several ways, eg select one in the Window menu and then Zoom it
or minimize/unminimize it.
FWIW, the problem's pretty much disappeared after updating to
Sierra, for me and at least a couple other people.
