I prefer to follow what the Unicode standards say about this.
There is no implicit encoding on wchar_t
At the risk of going off-topic ...
This is fully understood, and I believe the main point of Andy's
pain is exactly that: There is no standard.
As a corollary, our shared grief is: If you have the choice, why
chose the option that breaks a lot of people's code?
Except for breaking all that open source Unix server related code
that they use that relies on wchar_t to be 32 bits.
