Translation from Wikipedia NPV to plain English: Display PostScript was quite slow, wasn't useful for video or any alternative rendering systems, and Adobe wanted excessive licensing fees (that were, IIRC, per unit sold, not one-time — that's one of the reasons NeXTSTEP was expensive.)
