Or a more common one is cmd-first letter of the button. Both of these are very old Mac UI conventions.

In my experience that's the convention to a tee--augmented by one or more modifiers when the situation warrants it. Reminds me also that unless I've missed something blatantly obvious, there is no "Next Message" command. This would be particularly handy for being able to keep the focus in the message area while going though all the messages. Currently the only way to achieve this is by deleting the current message. One doesn't always want to do that.

How about something like:

Control-DownArrow = Next Message;
Control-UpArrow = Previous Message;
Option-Control-DownArrow = Next Mailbox (first unread);
Option-Control-UpArrow = Previous Mailbox (first unread);
