How to handle requests for public Bluetooth APIs

There has been some discussion on the list recently about needing APIs which are not currently supported. I want to take the opportunity to clarify a couple of things: We the Bluetooth developers at Apple do monitor this list and try to provide feedback to questions as we can. From time to time there will be requests for things which we do not currently support, and may or may not intend to support in the future (SCO, Java APIs, Kernel APIs for certain pieces are just a few recent examples). This list is a good place to make things known to the Bluetooth developer team at Apple, but is not the best nor the only place. At Apple we use technology evangelists to keep track of external developer needs, help us to internally monitor what our external developers want, and what things we at Apple can do to serve the most people with our limited time and resources. Given this, I would like to introduce Craig Keithley as the Bluetooth evangelist at Apple. In his role as technology evangelist, Craig is the appropriate point of contact at Apple for making known your desires for more APIs and different programming interfaces to the Bluetooth code from Apple. For requests for future API support please keep Craig in mind and send him your requests for new APIs as well as enhancements to the current APIs. Craig will coalesce all these requests, and help my team and the marketing team meet the constant demands between end customer goals, developer needs and bug fixes. As Apple's external contact Craig is in the best position to gather this information and present a unified case for all developers to add new API support for Bluetooth technology. You can contact Craig at: keithley(a)apple.com We are still interested in hearing questions, as well as requests for new APIs and needs here on the mailing list. We do not want to get out of the loop. That said, Craig is the best resource for gathering the requests, prioritizing the needs of developers and lobbying on your behalf to prioritize your needs with the other requests from others in Apple in terms of bug fixes and new features for customers. Currently the APIs to access HCI and L2CAP from the kernel are not public. This is another thing we are investigating, and are interested in developers needs in this area to decide how to proceed. Among the things we are interested in is: How many people need this, and what elements do they need? Well thanks to that prompting, I went and undid everything I thought I had needed to do and the notifications are still showing up so I guess it was a case of operator error... Thanks, Robert. What setting up did you have to do that fixed the problem? The default settings should be fine for what you want. I've just received my two IOGear USB Bluetooth adaptors and they're working fine - when I use one of the example apps my other computer shows up fine. However my monitoring application is not receiving Bluetooth Connect notifications. I'm using the Obj-C IOBluetoothDevice class to set up the notification. Am I supposed to be able to get the notification even though my app did not initiate or receive the connect? This type of thing is working fine for FireWire and USB... getEncryptionMode:

Hi, I've been looking at the OBEXSample and have a question about IOBluetoothDevice's getEncryptionMode method. In my Bluetooth system preferences I have "Use Encryption" checked. Yet when I check the encryptionMode of the IOBluetoothDevice (mDevice) in OBEXSample it returns 0 (kEncryptionDisabled) I'm sure the device is connected - because isConnected: returns TRUE. Am I missing something - I would have assumed that because of my preference above all BT connections would be encrypted - or is the method misbehaving? Matthias, Most companies abide by a simple formula: work = time = money So, in order to justify Apple to use resources in order to implement the JSR-82, a clear business case needs to made. In other words, will more people make "the switch" if Apple had a really cool Bluetooth platform? Will people find it cool that they can transfer their JSR-82 game from their phone to their iBook and play it there? Will developers create more apps that used Bluetooth to communicate between PDAs and desktops if they could use the same langauge on both platforms? And yes, a J2ME implementation is required to pass the JSR-82 TCK (technology compatibility kit). You can use the CLDC or the CDC (they are both J2ME). Now, the JSR-82 license has an important clause that I've noticed. You have to pay a royalty fee to Motorola only if you sell your JSR-82 implementation.
