The lesson is to implement some kind of in-house policy re: device ownership when there are multiple devices and multiple host systems. Must I use the Apple Bluetooth Setup Assistant in order to talk to a device? I've got a bunch of nearly identical prototype devices, all with the same hardware and firmware. For certain of my devices, I seem to be able to discover the device, open it, authenticate it, and establish an RFCOMM channel, all without the Setup Assistant. For certain other devices, however, without using the Setup Assistant, they either fail at the authenticate stage with error 2, or the call to -openRFCOMMChannelAsync: never completes. Please advise if so... In the path of a current project I'm trying to sort out the small details first, and I'm going through old code that has been given to me, to get me started so to speak. In this code I add a service that is defined in a .plist-directory file. I then try to get the name of the service but I get EXC_BAD_ACCESS when I call /IOBluetoothSDPServiceRecordGetServiceName/ This is how I do it: CFPropertyListRef HIDServiceDict = CreateHIDDictionary(); // reads .plist file and creates the dict, as far as I can tell it works all right result = IOBluetoothAddServiceDict( (CFDictionaryRef) HIDServiceDict, &HIDServiceRecord); if(result == kIOReturnSuccess) result = IOBluetoothSDPServiceRecordGetServiceRecordHandle(HIDServiceRecord, &HBHIDServiceRecordHandle); if(result == kIOReturnSuccess) // next line is where I get in to trouble! I think a coupled automator script could be done using parts of those above... If I don't release the channel in my close method (just close and remove the notifier) the crashing is not reproducible. So, if you decide to go with the C API, you will have to require a later version of 10.4, such as 10.4.2. I would recommend using the objective C API if at all possible, as it should work from 10.4 on.
