Profiling with i1 Photo Pro: UV Cut or not?

Hi, I am about to take the plunge and purchase an i1 Photo Pro. My workflow is mainly RGB, but I foresee the possible future of profiling for CMYK | RIP environments. Tech support from Xrite told me they have not found any reason or drawback to the UV Cut Filter. Yet it's unclear to me why would they still offer both version. Based on this the questions are: -Is there any drawback in using the UV Cut Filter version in the RGB workflow? -Anything else I should be considering? Thanks so much for the help! Archival image reproduction on Kodak Creo IQ3 scanner

You have a number of things going on here. The biggest problem is the variety of colorants in the original image. Or to be more specific, the different spectral power distribution of the colorants. Two "colors" made of different physical colorants may appear to match under one illuminant but not under another. Or they may appear to match to one detector system (e.g., the human VS) and not to another (e.g.m film, scanner, digital camera). These are all very simple tristimulus detection systems that cannot take the necessary multitude of spectral "slices" of the sampled colors. UV fluorescence is a related problem--very common in photographing (and scanning) artwork. Filter the light source if possible. Paper color in older documents may not be a difficult issue as they tend to lack both strong color or UV fluorescing agents (optical brighteners). Just don't "white out" on the substrate. If you print render with absolute colorimetric intent, like a proof. I don't see any fail-safe method for accounting, through ICC profiling, for every combination of pigments and dyes you'll encounter. Can you make a profiling target for each of these, using the actual (obscure, ancient) colorants in the profiling target? Of course not. Now if you had a spectral multisampling capture device instead of the usual RGB systems the translation could be done. Maybe Nasa has something... I haven't looked closely at the system that HP marketed recently--my recollection is that it did make use of some limited spectral sampling of the artwork. Does anyone know more about this? Having one bad monitor is bad luck but having three 30" and three of a less demanding size 27" of a top of the range (specially selected quality) raises some difficult questions for NEC. I neglected to mention in my previous posting that the Eizo I'm so pleased with is their latest 27" model. Some months ago I recounted the saga of having been supplied with three NEC SpectraView 30" and three SpectraView 27" screens all with poor evenness and neutrality. Several people from this list took an interest and were very supportive. Thank you guys. I would like to report that with the launch of the Eizo CG275W here in the UK we have a monitor that is excellent. From the very moment it was switched on it was quite obvious that this monitor was even in brightness and neutrality from corner to corner. It is a joy to work with this screen and the pop-up calibration device seems to work very well much to my surprise and is very quick in its operation! It is appropriate that I extend my thanks to the Colour Confidence organisation here in the UK for having dealt with all the frustrations, and for supplying the Eizo as soon as it became available, without leaving me out of pocket. Two scan runs and smart computing should deliver better color reproduction of a range of pigments. Hi Dan, Yes, I’ve tried it and works very well… for Pantone color preview only in myPantone v2 app on the iPad. The ICC profile is not saved on the Mac. So, the iPad screen calibration is made only for better Pantone preview on the iPad, not for picture!
