Cyan overlay when printing with Epson 3800

Hello everyone, my custumer get a special problem with his Epson 3800 when switching to a new Mac (Prozessor 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon), Mac OS 10.6.8 and Photoshop CS 5 Extended (Version 12.1 x 64). He writes: • I create a new Image in the upper mentioned photoshop Version in a Size of 13x18 cm (5x7 inch) It's no matter if its in Adobe RGB or ECI-RGB. Attention: if I do the same in an older PS version (like CS4 Extended), I don´t have any of this problems, i can print completly normal. • I go to print, choose paper-size A3+ • positioning my picture over the printermenu • and use the print command • my 13x18cm picture is going to be printed and the complete rest of the paper even where nothing should be printed) is overlayed with a light tone of cyan. I mentioned the whole thing , because I wondered why the printhead moved over the whole paper , instead of moving the paper through the printer after the 13x18 picture was printed. The light Cyan tone is adding more and more, the more you print on the paper. To clear what I´m exactly doing: I create some edited photos for a test print. Those fore-prints are going to be placed in my archive, that´s the reason why I don´t cut the paper to the right size; I always use my a3+ paper in the whole size, positioning my photos side by side in the printer-menu. So it happened a few times that I put the same paper in the printer, again and again. But now it´s not possible anymore because of this Cyan-overlay I´ve already done the following tests: • insert a complete white paper (RGB tone 255) photo in 13x18 cm • used paper-size 127x178mm, and insertet an A3+ paper • gave the print command • normaly nothing should happen know, because the printer don´t have anything to print, instead of a clean white paper • the printer starts, skips the chosen photo and prints outside the 13x18 cm white area in cyan • I have taken my older Mac (Mac OS X version 10.5.8, CPU 2.3 Ghz G5) with the older PS version, and he does it without any problems. (no Cyan-overlay, or printing delays) He uses the common settings in the Photoshop-printdialogue: Photoshop manages colors, relativ and chooses the printerprofile in the Photoshop-printdialogue. The settings in the printerdriver are also the normal settings: No colorcorrection (prepared and saved in another application because of the known problems) Has anyone an idea what to do? No, Martin is not picking the wrong rendering intent. I started noticing this as soon as I moved to Snow Leopard. Two things happened: Everything printed through CS3 started printing about a half stop dark, so I migrated to CS5 printing, which solved the dark printing, but added the scum dot. At first I thought I had mistakenly made a v4 profile, but I have only ever made v2 profiles. It's something that happened in the move to Snow Leopard. Making new profiles in i1Profiler solved the scum dot problem, but created new problems as well. Believe it or not, not every user out there is up to date, and if you use the new i1 profiles in CS3 and SL, you will get prints that are really dark - I'm talking ten stops or more dark. I wrote a detailed message to X-Rite about all of this and guess what? I never heard a damned thing back from them. Oh well. For the record, every person I know making prints on a Mac with the same setup and Gretag profiles has had the same issue. For a lot of applications, it's not really a big deal, but if you need to show the white as part of your image, you better remember to expand the canvas or print through the Adobe Color Print Utility, which does not have the problem. Retired and just an amateur now. I always had this problem when using absolute colorimetric. Switched to relative colorimetric and it went away. John Warner

MacBook Pro Retina with graphic card switching. Profile... card dependent?

The MacBook Pro Retina has 2 graphics cards, sort of. There is the integrated Intel 4000 "card" and the NVIDIA card (1gb VRAM). By default, dynamic graphic card switching is enabled in System Preferences, Energy Saver. After installing the application "gfxCardStatus" one can see which card is being used. If you have dynamic switching active the card used is dependent on which applications have been launched. For example, if Photoshop or Bridge is launched then the card will switch from Integrated to Discrete (NVIDIA). That raises the question: Is the profile generated by calibration software valid for both cards? I would not think so. This raises the question of how this is managed. I would always want the screen to be set up for imaging apps like Photoshop. Add in the variable of an external monitor and it could get complex. Any ideas? Barry Rudick

Lost ICC profiles

When I upgraded from my Mac G5 Tower to an intel based Mac Tower and upgraded to Snow Leopard all of the ICC profiles for my Epson printers stopped showing up under "View" "Custom" in Photoshop and In design. I went to User-Library- Colorsync-profiles and they were all there so I copied them to the System-library-colorsync-profiles file. Bur Photoshop and In Design still can not find them. I reinstalled the printer drivers, and they still don't show up. In addition all of the profiles I have downloaded for other papers like Hannemühle, Photo rag etc are missing. I am an artist, who prints my own reproductions, so I am at a standstill until I can fix this problem. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix it? Thanks for any and all insight. Lois

i1profiler

Hi List, Are the Display Patch Sets "Device Values" available anywhere for peaking? I dabbled with the 119 and 478 patch sets for measuring my display. I got a ".dmxf" file containing the measurements alone, no trace of Device Values anywhere. I hunted for some kind of "TestCharts" Reference Values everywhere on my hard drive but no cigar. I guess the Device Values are hard-coded? Best / Roger
