Seeking advice prior to upgrading camera and scanner calibration tools (HCT)

Hi, Once again left with tools that are incompatible with newer Mac and OS… Amongst others, BasiCColor Scan PPC is not supported by OS 10.8. The good surprise though, is that the calibration package I have just purchased to calibrate my monitors seems to offer a free scanner and camera profiling option ! (but is it really operational at no additional cost, I mean without having a measuring tool other than the monitor puck plugged in?). However, my Hutchcolor HCT target (on Fuji Velvia) is unfortunately not supported by X-Rite i1Profiler. So, as far as I can see, I'm left with those two options: — Purchase a new IT8 target for the X-Rite software (no idea of the cost). — Upgrade BasiCColor Scan (already an upgrade from Profile City ICC Scan) to BasiCColor Input (no idea of the cost either). I came to like the target produced by Don Hutcheson. It is sort of wide gamut and extended range, compared to standard Kodak IT8 targets. Whether that alone makes better profiles, I assume it does, especially since I shot mainly Fuji Velvia in a former life, but I don't really know. My target is now maybe 10 years old though (and so are my slides), but it was used no more than 4 or 5 times and stored in a dark cool place. BasiCColor still lists the HCT target. Their older software made good profiles for the Eversmart scanner. I now wish to calibrate my Canon 1Ds III as well (with the included Hutcheson Crystal archive print I guess, also 10 years old). In the other hand, X-Rite software is certainly more convenient to use (unlike BasiCColor: one does it all and no need to register a machine specific TAN number that gets lost with every hardware upgrade or system renewal, though the BasiCColor team has always been helpful I must say). X-Rite i1 DisplayPro is the best Monitor profiler I have used so far, and allowed me to obtain a pretty good match of MBPr, NEC PA271 wide gamut and Lacie 321 standard gamut, all with specific backlighting options. Whether it would make as good or better camera profiles, I have no idea. Have you? Thanks in advance for your advice! Best regards Paul Schilliger

many of us doing custom B&W hue work, whether monochrome inksets, or what you are doing, use this trick a lot- Get Quadtone RIP, $50 shareware. Print one of his step wedges with your system, toned however you like. Make a "create icc" profile.. assign it to your image file, then convert to sRGB for your web work.. been working for for years! All the B&W work made with Cone inksets on my website are represented that way- http://tylerboley.com/ create icc is a great tool for many things.. whterh you use QTR for printing or not. Tyler

Soft-proof copying in Photoshop

Hi all, I have printed black & white images with ImagePrint and used their special b&w non icc profiles and the split toning feature. I also made an icc profile to be able to soft-proof the image in Photoshop before printing with ImagePrint. How can I "copy" the soft-proofed image including the special split tones and the paper black simulation? I need realistic files for my web site. Thanks, Peter Baumbach

I assumed most on this list were aware of such things. As we age or corneas yellow. This naturally serves as a yellow filter and affects our ability to see light of that wavelength. Our brains have an adjustment mechanism for this and indeed for light anomalies in general and, so to speak, turns up the gain on the filtered light to still give us white balance. .. these are our knobs like what you would find on an old school analog drum scanner to adjust for an unbalanced transparency. ..it's one of the most exciting parts of color science to me. I would caution against color experimentation on oneself if you make a substantial portion of your living from your eyes. .. there is strong indication that if you apply enough filtration to your vision for long enough that your frontal cortex will retain a strong chemical pathway for any perceptual adaptation created during the experiment. It fades over time but has been seen in test subjects for several weeks. You could do some experiments on yourself by wearing a pair of yellow tinted glasses with one lens removed (or replaced by a blue tinted lens). How does the brain adapt to that? Is one eye dominant? Or does the brain average the results out? When you set up your soft-proof (View > Proof Set-Up > Custom Setting, etc, etc), also set up your Info Panel to give you the R/G/B (or C/M/Y/K) readouts for the soft-proof situation by choosing Proof Color as your second read-out. This should give you accurate numbers. Hope that helps.
