That said, I think the suggestion of starting over is a good one. It's not clear from what Russell has told us if his friend is using the i1 puck (I'm guessing that the i1 comes with some sort of puck to read the screen while calibrating) but it sounds to me like maybe he didn't use the puck??? Barry, It is worth knowing about the "internal calibration" capabilities of this monitor. If, indeed, this monitor has built-in LUT capabilities, as Eizo or NECs, it would be worth experimenting with using that first, and only use the Spyder to build a ICC profile *on top* of that calibration. It's been a while since I used the Spyder software myself, perhaps there is a some kind of option to test gamma or other calibration scheme? So that the user would be able to judge how good is the monitor calibration to begin with. I believe Argyll offers this capability (among its extensive set of analytic capabilities), if it can't be found in the Spyder software. Asus monitor calibration

I think you should start over with the Spyder. I have calibrated many Windows driven monitors. The first thing to do is turn off all monitor control software, or better said perhaps is to put the monitor in it’s native state. If you can determine how to do that then running SpyderPro or equivalent with the Spyder Calibrator you will get to where you want to go. The controls on the monitor should allow you to choose which state you want. If you can put it in native state with no internal calibration that would be ideal. The calibration will be supplied by the Spyder calibration and the ICC profile created will be the one to point the system to as the monitor profile. You can not have two profiles working at once. As I mentioned, I've never used an i1 but doesn't it come with a calibration puck that is used in conjunction with the calibration software? I wasn't impressed with the Asus documentation either and don't get me started the total crap experience I had with I contacted Asus support--will never do that again. That said, I've been happy with my PA248Q monitor and would likely buy another of their PA-level monitors. On thing you didn't answer is which Windows O/S your friend is using? First...I'm running a Win7(pro/64bit) system so I'm not sure if Win10 (ugh!) works the same way and I use a DataColor Spyder to calibrate my monitor and have never used X-Rite equipment. I have the Asus ProArt 248Q. I used the Asus PA248Q supplied profile as a starting point. If memory serves, I copied the profile to C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color. I then went to Control Panel > Color Mangement > Device tab: in the "Device" section, I chose my PA249Q monitor and, in the "Profiles Associated with this device" section, I clicked on the "Add" button and either found the PA248Q Asus-supplied profile in the "ICC Profiles" list or used the "Browse" button to navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color for the PA248Q profile--I'm pretty sure the profile showed up in the "ICC Profiles" list since I had done the copy to the \color subdir. I rebooted at this point. Using the monitor's OSD (on screen display), I did tweak my monitor settings prior to running the Spyder software as follows: Brightness=25, Contrast=80, Saturation=50, Hue=50, Color Temp=6500k, Gamma=2.2--basically, this was just to make the monitor "normal" to my particular eyes and I'm not sure it's need/necessary. I rebooted after doing this I then started the Datacolor Spyder software working my way through its calibration process using: Gamma=2.2, WhitePoint=6500k, Brightness=120cd/m2 tweaking the monitor settings (via OSD) as necessary. Once the Spyder calibration process was completed, it created a monitor profile (I chose a custom name rather than use the default generated name) which was saved in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color. I checked Contorl Panel > Color Management to confirm that the new profile was not only listed in the "Profile associated with this device" but also set as the default. I then rebooted and the Spyder's "profile has been loaded" message displayed. Hope the above proves useful... Terrie tlbtlb(a)mail.com

Asus ProArt Calibration ?

I'm trying to help someone with a Asus ProArt PA329 monitor with Windows 10 and am confused about what profile to use at the OS system level and what role an Xrite i1 has in calibrating this monitor. The documentation is very sparse to say the least. The i1 can be used with the Asus software perform a hardware calibration and then it profile it creates is stored in the monitor hardware. "ASUS ProArt Calibration Technology saves all color parameter profiles on the ProArt monitor’s internal scaler IC chip instead of the PC." But as there is no profile created in the system profiles folder what is the user supposed to use for the OS? Trying to create a profile using the i1 software results in a mess. Without creating a custom profile the only one for Adobe apps to use seems to be the one canned profile that ships with the monitor. Is that correct? Sorry if this has already been discussed previously on this list. If so, could someone just point me to the year/month and I'll dig through the archives. Thanks to anyone with experience with this monitor. Russell

Ben and Andrew, I'd wish X-Rite would have chosen to NOT christen this device "Munki". They could have use "X25" or "Z99" or some other code. Me thinks "Munki" evokes "Monkey" too much, and creates the perception of a "toy" or something not serious -- inferior. Has your friend actually measured his display Luminance to be 700 cd/m2? That value seems pretty high. If I was at his place, I would leave everything to defaults in the nvidia control panel -- all linear. Let basICColor Display manage the video card trough other structures. I’m not sure if he plays games with it, but he does want to get into photo editing. His original question to me was “why are my prints always too dark” when he claims to have the display set at 700cd/m2. What equipment should I recommend to get him started? Thanks.
