That is, is you are in /this/path/here and you run ../there/that/program from the shell, you can infer /this/path/here/../there/that/program. Despite some problems, realpath (3) can normalize that into an absolute path. The best way to read configuration data isn't necessarily from a path relative to the program. In general you should not attempt to modify your application or files inside your applications bundle (assuming this is a bundle based application), for example you may not have write permissions to the directory that contains you application. It seems to be possible for user A to kill -9 a process whose saved set-user-ID is 0 (root) and effective user ID is A's. Is there any way for a process to avoid getting killed like that when doing, say, a seteuid(A)-fopen()-seteuid(0) sequence to access a file under A's permissions (like pppd does with ~/.ppprc)? No, you're probably not. xnu is the kernel. malloc in userspace is implemented in the Libc project, in Libc/gen/malloc.c and scalable_malloc.c. I don't see how you're going to learn the BSD style of malloc-ing by looking at Apple's implementation, which is not shared with any other OS that I know of. [Ifound CFString but not clear if there is a one to one mapping of CFString functionality to string(3) functionality.] Am I missing something obvious (if so sorry!) The most portable way would be to use wchar. See wmemchr(3) and multibyte(3). It requires the locale to be sett correctly though, and typically work in UTF-32. If that's not what you're looking for you can use CFString or some third party library.
