What build are you running on? (`sw_vers`) and which plists have you loaded into darwinbuild? You might get farther by specifying the build on the command line, i.e. `bin/darwinbuild -build=8A428 rsync 20` if you had 8A428.plist loaded. The larger question is probably "why are you asking about SMP support on Darwin x86". If you are expecting high or even reasonable performance (compared to Linux or FreeBSD), you're probably not installing Darwin for the right reasons. Darwin x86 is not about performance or peripheral support. A quick Google search seems to indicate that Darwin 7.0.1 supported SMP so I would assume that is still true in Darwin 8. The GIDs you are seeing are normal for the Active Directory plug-in. So the question is why can't you access the file if the group is not set to staff? Are you using 10.3.x or 10.4.x? Are there any ACLs involved? Perhaps a directory listing (ls -la) from the directory in question would help. Can you cat the file as the user in question? Maybe the application is doing some additional preflight on the file permissions before allowing you to use the file. To answer your more general question, I would say that it's not a question of philosophy, but of what set of users you want to have access to the file in question. At any rate giving the OS access to the hashes is a bad idea, since someone could brute force them. Still, Finlay has a good point that more hash types should be supported. Not mapping the Password attribute is the appropriate workaround, but really the LDAP plug-in should be updated to deal with all the common hash types. While doing a secure authentication is certainly preferable, if a password hash is readable then it should be used rather than doing a cleartext bind. Login Window is intentionally using a different authentication method here, but I believe the problem is that when a hash is found it (which is not understood by the plug-in) it is not returning the appropriate eDSAuthFailedClearTextOnly which indicates that login can proceed.
