I suggest trying to build Libc using the Darwin Build scripts available at <http://darwinsource.opendarwin.org/darwinbuild/>, since these will do the required setup work. When building Libc, be sure to specify the -chroot option on the command line. I am trying to tweak the pthreads implementation for darwin. So, I was trying to recompile the Darwin 8.0 pthreads library, and hence libc library. I am currently using my laptop running 10.4.1, and I seem to be running into a number of compiler problems. These range from simple things like the Makefile trying to use gcc-3.5, which doesn't exist, to a number of files requiring machine/cpu_capabilities.h and ppc/cpu_capabilitites.h, neither of which are available in the normal install. Whatever part of the system is caching foo.txt shouldn't be doing so once the write to bar/bar.txt has happened. And why, even after I've removed foo.txt and imported bar/bar.txt, hasn't it been updated yet in line 20? foo.txt and bar.txt are the same file; it just has two names. Only one of those names can be cached; in this case, it's the one by which the file was first looked up. I really meant to imply the question, "why would the cache not be updated with the name by which the file was *most recently* looked up?" Both bar.txt and quxx.txt are links to the same file. Now you have to remember that the node was looked up as quxx.txt under baz, but as bar.txt under foo. Since all of that information can change as files are renamed, and since there's no guarantee that a file will even have a name at all, maintaining this information is a lot of work for very little return. Whereas with the current situation you remember that the node was once looked up as bar.txt under foo, and provide that pathname whether or not it still exists (even if a currently existing pathname, e.g., quxx.txt under baz, has been used more recently). This is slightly less work for considerably less (indeed, arguably negative) return. All that is required to implement what I would like is that each time a vnode is associated with a parent vnode (e.g., creating a file or hard link in a directory), you store the vnode number of the parent along with the name of the child from the perspective of that parent, and each time a vnode is disassociated from a parent (e.g., deleting a file or hard link from a directory), you remove that stored information (renaming a file being a dissociation plus association in a single operation). Then you can always provide every fully- qualified filename by which a vnode can be referenced (including being able to detect if all links to file have been removed). Instead, developers must get used to the idea that despite having a vnode, or a file handle, they may not be able to get a path at which it can be looked up. They must have had to all the more so before vn_getpath() existed (presumably it owes its existence to developers turning round and saying, "okay, but it would be really useful if we could" and then implementing a solution somewhat half-heartedly). As far as I can tell I am not suggesting rocket science? Or am I underestimating the cost of implementing what I would consider to be a decent benefit? At the very least, surely the current caching mechanism should freshen the cache more often than it does? smime.p7s

You have an interesting set of circumstances - I have some questions for you below. Two theories: 1) Driver deadlock • Configd is hung in a mig call into the kernel for IOPMSetAggressiveness. • Since you say this is frequently correlated with sleep problems, I suspect there's a deadlock somewhere on the wake side of sleep/wake that disables a driver or two, but leaves the system as a whole more or less functional. • Deadlock on wake could explain why the IOPMSetAggressiveness call is stuck. It could be waiting for a lock/workloop that's deadlocked elsewhere. 2) "Automatic" CPU setting in Energy Saver, hang in platform expert changing CPU speed -> Was there any 3rd party non-Apple hardware (or kext-level software) present every time you saw this problem? It sounds unlikely given the amount of testing you've already done, but I have to ask. -> Can you send me (privately, off list) a System Profiler report so I can take a look at your hardware? -> Email me the ouput of "pmset -g" from Terminal -> What's the CPU Speed slider set to under the Energy Saver options? Try it on Reduced or Highest for a few days. Does either one generate the problem? I've been having a strange problem with configd and I was directed here from another list with my question/problem. My machine is 1.8 G5 (single), 10.4.1. configd keeps going into state "Us" when viewed with ps -aux. This is a regular occurrence: happens at least once a day, but usually more when it's being used. It does not appear to ever get out of this state by itself and a restart is required. KILL doesn't work and configd ignores -HUP. This manifests itself by erratic sleep-related behavior (won't sleep, won't wake up, can't mount external drives, ignores certain preference changes) and if left in that state for a long time other crazy things start happening: When typing the insertion point will jump all over the place in a document, problems with iMovie, weird stuff. I've been through every level of troubleshooting: PRAM and permissions; clean installs; removing/checking RAM; replacing video cards, motherboards and eventually the entire machine. Name it, it has been covered. The problem existed on 10.3 and now on 10.4. It has been there since day one on both machines. I've been directed to use configd -dv, but that doesn't seem to produce much output on 10.4. Others have said sudo sample configd 10 10. I don't know what to do with that. My Apple Store has "escalated" this but I'm going to keep at it on my own. Any ideas on what I might be able to do? This is really bizarre and I'm not the only one with these issues. Try adding --verbose to the command and inspect the output for further clues... The --setBoot argument (which used to be called --setOF) does not change the on-disk representation at all, but instead changes the boot-device open firmware variable (`nvram boot-device`). It's not possible (as far as I know) to modify an open firmware variable on a machine that is in target disk mode. Thus, I don't think your problem has any relation to the bootx.bootinfo file, but instead is due to the open firmware variable not being set on the PowerBook (until you set it via the option key and clicking the icon at boot). The thing is, the disk doesn't even appear when I boot the PowerBook with the option key.
