I then wrote a simple Perl script to, well, change 'em. All is cool in kqueue-land, with hundreds (soon to test thousands, then tens of thousands, over a network, across a moat, with a goat, etc). Now, I want to see how scaleable it is. Is there a tool (ktrace maybe?) that I can use to measure the latency between a file being changed, and my C++ app being notified of it? I can do some basic timing in my Perl code, saying "I changed X files in N seconds" and my C++ code, saying "I processed X notifications in N seconds", and extrapolate, but silly me wants more. I just realized it was there ... No, I don't know where i've been, but thanks for asking :-) It's been in there at least since 10.3.9 (in fact, xnu-517). I think its actual use was minimal, though. I'm getting familiar with I/O Kit, but the Jaguar header files are pretty sparse. Is the source for system_profiler available? I couldn't find it on Apple site. A tiny fraction of the files I've ever dealt with have had both data and resource forks, except for the very weird PPC/68k binaries that existed under OS 9. With the benefit of hindsight, bundles work better than forks. Anything a fork can do, a bundle can also do. Bundles can do many things forks can't. Bundles work transparently with unmodified code for archiving, because they fit into the hierarchy model. I think a lot of debates on this get bogged down because it's obviously true that the resource structures are cool, but in practice, most of what they're used for could be done with resource-only files. I mean, I guess I have to grant that "image thumbnails" are sort of cool, but it's a pretty specialized application. I don't think, in the long run, the cost in code maintenance has been remotely worth it. On the other hand, I don't necessarily think those engineers were wrong; they made an interesting decision, and we learned a lot from it.
