site_archiver(a)lists.apple.com Delivered-To: darwin-dev(a)lists.apple.com Hello, We're making a universal binary of an app that calls task_for_pid() on PPC to gather cputime statistics on demand for its child processes and displays the stats in a window in a ps-like fashion. (We retrieved the source for ps and found the task_for_pid() call). Alas, task_for_pid has gone privileged on Intel, and since ps is SUID root, I assume ps is still using task_for_pid. But we can't, since we're not (and don't want to be) run as root. Is there another non-privileged, reasonably cheap way to collect cputime stats for our child processes that are still running without resorting to shelling out/popen()ing ps? We only care about processes owned by our UID. Wait4() is too late, because we want incremental stats, not just the ending stats. Our users are used to watching "das blinkenlights" :-). The file descriptor is STDIN_FILENO which is a perfectly valid descriptor. If I replace it with another descriptor, the program does not abort anymore, but it doesn't work with stdin... Could anyone enlightened in MAC OS X programming clarify why it behaves so? I do not see any programming errors in it. P.S. Are there any USB serial adapters that go higher than 230.4 kbps? Power Mac G3's and G4's have built in serial ports (non-beige Macs require something like a Griffin gPort to make the port accessable to external devices). Normally they can go only as high as 230.4 kbps but they can be externally clocked. An external clock of almost 15 MHz is required for asynchronous data at 921.6 kpbs (16x clock mode * 921k 15M). I don't know if you can put 15 MHz on the serial port pin (I think MIDI devices use an external 2 MHz clock). Another option is to use the 1x clock mode. Using a baud rate generater value of 0 and the internal clock of 3.6864 MHz will give 921.5 kbps. The 1x clock mode is not good for asynchronous data though. It's usually used when both devices are connected to the same clock (externally clocked) such as MIDI devices. If your device can be externally clocked then the 1x clock mode with an external clock can be used. The SCC chip has another clock PCLK that can be used by the baud rate generator but it's frequency differs on various Macs and is not at least 16 times faster than the 3.6864 MHz clock (I think on a B&W G3 the PCLK is approximately 22 MHz, G4 -> 15.7 MHz, etc). The source code of drivers for the built-in serial ports are available from Darwin and can be modified to support the other clock modes. It was a sovereign project and not under Apple's control, so all these conspiracy theories linking it to Apple's own open source plans are baseless and don't add any value to the darwin-dev mailing list. Apple's own open source page, http://developer.apple.com/opensource/, is right where it's always been and continues to provide various open source resources to the community. When and if we make any changes to our open source offerings or services, you'll hear about it through the appropriate apple.com channels, not opendarwin or slashdot! So what's the status of xnu on x86? How is it appropriate for pieces of Darwin to disappear without any guidance on what's happening for months at a time? I realize that WWDC is coming up, but why hasn't there been any statement on what's happening with xnu on x86? Note that I'm not making any value judgment on the usefulness of xnu on x86 to a broad population, but this seems to indicate that Darwin components can and will disappear at will without any announcement, communication, or warning from Apple. Even if xnu source for x86 reappears at WWDC and/or with Leopard, we still had a half a year of limbo - how can enterprises, organizations, or individuals depending on Darwin components continue to depend upon them in good faith? And yes, I'm well aware of the fact that many folks feel they aren't getting as much information as they'd like, or in as timely a fashion as they'd like, through those same apple.com channels but try and be patient all the same. We're all working as hard as we can within certain constraints here. Can you explain to us a little why Apple feels it can't even comment on things that are seemingly as simple as what is going on with sources for certain projects within Apple's ostensibly established open source policy? smime.p7s
