Apple has always been in control of OS X, which is, BTW, not Darwin. Apple seems committed to continuing with Darwin (not Mac OS X) in the Open Source arena, along with dedicated commitments to return contributions to open source projects. The closure of a third party FOSS Darwin project changes this no more than say the loss of postfix would spell the doom for the entire open source community. And if anyone does feel so strongly about it, they should start their own project along its lines. what exactly has OpenDarwin-proper done in the last few years? They made about all of the Darwin projects buildable for the public. As you probably know, sources posted at Apple Darwin aren't always free of glitches. but what are we losing here, at present? A central point for working with Apple's open source. A divergent point in Apple's Open Source model might be more accurate. I've run into quite a few ppl over the years that thought OpenDarwin was Darwin (which is already 'open'.) And again, if you feel so strongly about its loss, continue it yourself and with others so concerned. Sadly, some people thought that would have been irresponsible and caused even more confusion than the announcement did. As for current content, we're going to make an effort to ensure anything people want is still available. Several people have asked about hosting some of the content, and we're working it out. Sure, it is sad to see it go, but they have listed their reasons. And while maybe a general disappointment about Apple's communication with the project is one (of the many) reasons, I see not why this has anything to do with "OS X becoming fully closed source" And, I probably read too many Mac lists today already, I am pretty tired of the doomsday postings this event has created.
