IOCommandGate vs ISyncer

IOCommandGate should be used in preference. I'm working in an IOStorage subclass where I need to serialize the completion routine for a read or write. This seems to be what IOSyncer is designed to do. Is there a "recipe" for how to accomplish this with an IOCommandGate? It's not entirely how this would be done with an IOCommandGate. I need to call a routine that is asynchronous and indicates completion by a completion routine. However, the function I am writing is synchronous and cannot return until the asynchronous request is finished. What is the recipe for this seemingly simple task (that IOSyncer handles very nicely) with IOCommandGate. Please consider just leaving "RunAtLoad" == true and then have your program read a configuration file to determine whether any action is necessary. No. This is intentional. We don't want users to reboot their computers unless the kernel, drivers or firmware has been updated. To further this goal, we try hard to hide the fact that the first launch of a program is due to booting up as opposed to some other criteria. However, one is free to store a side database. In that, one can cache WatchPath modification dates / details. One can then use these values to determine whether to proceed with other transactions. Much the same way as any other code - Shark. :) You'll need to exercise your kext appropriately, obviously, but Shark's Time Profiling configs will record kernel callstacks for you, and you can filter the results to focus in on your kext specifically. You may also find System Trace useful, along with appropriate signposts in your kext. And there's other configs that may be of use, too, depending on what your kext does. If you wish to provide more detail about what your kext does and what performance issues you've perceived, I can give you a more precise idea of where you'll want to start. Writing driver for 3D input device, treating as a joystick?

Given that I would like it be recognized by any application that handles joysticks, such as a flight simulator, what is the best approach. Are there any existing drivers that I could base this on. The device would be communicating via serial port (tty device). Specifically this device is similar to the Magellan or 3Dconnexion Spaceball, so if anyone knows of any open source drivers for MacOS X, this would be handy. An open is a reference, and a directory entry is a reference. It is quite common for UNIX programs to create a temporary file, open it, and unlink it, leaving it open, and use this as a means of having the file get automatically cleaned up if the program crashes. So you actually do not need to "detect" anything: your daemon will have absolutely no problems continuing to read, write, extend, truncate, map, or otherwise use the file contents, until the file is closed. When a file is "mounted" by the user, the daemon opens the file as normal. But the user can then remove the file from the terminal, and the daemon will be none-the-wiser. a) lock the file from the daemon side that will prevent the user from deleting the file (but allowing the user to _read_ the file). So far, my search for a solution on this has led me to believe that it isn't possible. "man chflags" does not list uulink as an option on 10.5.4, and I'm not even sure if the "rm" command would listen to it. b) code the daemon to detect the file was deleted, so it can tear down the block device. I think this may make more sense, since it removes the chance of an application or utility not abiding by the rules of a locking solution. Or, if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears! Either way, it'd be nice to know what other peeps would do for this situation - maybe I'm missing something fundamental. Or even just a list of the key strings as symbolic constants? Obviously, I can create it manually by building a dictionary and then calling [NSDictionary writeToFile: ...], but I'm trying to avoid reinventing (or rewriting?) the wheel. :) There's only maybe 40 string constants in total supported by launchd in total (man launchd.plist), and most of Apple's entries only use maybe 10-15. Just make the dictionaries yourself with either CF or NS objects. Any API that would expose the full capabilities of launchd would probably be more complex than just coding up the dictionary structure yourself, customized to exactly the keys you need.
