It would be an easy exploit vector otherwise. 3rd party kexts should be placed in /Library/Extensions (NOT /S/L/E) by an Installer or by an app that authenticates itself and copies a KEXT from its bundle to /L/E with the proper permissions. KEXTs installed in /L/E do not affect the boot caches. Could you please provide reference to the documentation about /Library/ Extensions/ folder? I do remember i was study this question in the Tiger times, and was adviced against this by apple engineers. The only reason to install in /S/L/E is if the KEXT is needed to boot the OS from disk. Not only, any device drivers which need to be loaded in responce to device plugged in, AFAIC. It will only tell you it hasn't found the target. What specific API's/Methods should I be using? What user activities/ events/stats can I monitor? I'm thinking along the lines of Active Timer, Log Application Usage, and TrackTime. Once kevent() reports that the process exited, I use waitpid() to get its exit status. (I'm using kevents to actually do the waiting so I can enforce a timeout.) When I call waitpid(), I specify the WNOHANG option. Intuitively, I would assume that this option would be safe because by the time I call waitpid(), kevent() already reported that the child exited.
